Chamber Music School
Career opportunities
Professional concert activity oriented toward performing as a soloist or in chamber and ensemble groups.
Characteristics of the Final Exam
Free concert programme of approximately 30 minutes, in chamber group, which must not coincide with another programme performed in full in previous examinations.
Training Objectives.
Upon completion of the 2nd Level Academic Diploma in Chamber Music, graduates will have achieved an artistic personality and a high level of professionalism,
enabling them to realise and express their own artistic concepts; a good knowledge of the styles and instrumental/vocal/interpretive techniques associated with them, of the historical repertoire of ensemble music as well as contemporary music, enabling them to perform in a wide range of different contexts; the ability o to interpret music from the historical repertoire of ensemble music as well as contemporary music with a distinctive and personal flair; o to make an adequate contribution with artistic professionalism, both as a soloist and in chamber groups and orchestral ensembles; o to develop further and independently their own aesthetic tendencies in a particular field of specialisation; o to develop further and independently one’s own aesthetic tendencies in a particular area of specialisation; o to combine knowledge with practical skills in order to strengthen one’s own artistic development; o to present one’s own artistic concepts both orally and in writing; o to undertake artistic projects in new or unfamiliar contexts in an organised manner, also in collaboration with experts from other artistic fields, in the context of musical theatre or the world of production. Optional subjects include the 24 CFA required for participation in the competition for teaching in schools; appropriate techniques of posture and emotional control; appropriate knowledge of musical computing; and knowledge of a second Community language.
Qualifications and skills required for entry
Possession of a university degree or a first-level academic diploma, or a conservatoire diploma together with an upper secondary school diploma, or any other qualification obtained abroad and recognised as equivalent. It is also necessary that the preparation acquired is coherent and appropriate to the second level course.Candidates who expect to obtain the required qualifications by the February-March session of the academic year in question may apply for conditional admission.
Entrance Examination
Possible preliminary round: Performance of a piece of the candidate’s choice with a maximum duration of 10′.
Practical test: performance of an important piece from the solo literature of the candidate’s instrument and an important chamber music composition from the classical period or later, with an ensemble of the candidate’s choice, from duo to non
with an ensemble of the candidate’s choice, from duo to nonetto.
If it is not possible to use collaborators for the performance of a chamber music piece:
a) Performance of a significant piece from the candidate’s own solo repertoire.
b) Performance of their own part of a chamber music piece from the Duo al Nonetto repertoire.
Reading test: extemporaneous performance of a piece assigned by the Commission (maximum time allowed before the performance: 2 times the
duration of the piece).
Oral exam: the interview will focus on the training course already undertaken and on any professional orientations that have already emerged during the last years of training, in particular with reference to the interests of the specific address.

First year
Analysis Methodologies
Course year: 1 – Credits: 6 β Hours: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Exam syllabus:
Discussion of a written paper concerning the analysis of a work belonging to the solo repertoire, with piano or orchestra of the instrument studied, to be agreed with the teacher during the lessons. In this paper, to be delivered to the Secretariat at least five days before the exam, the student must make direct reference to the methodologies and topics covered by the teacher during the lessons. The student will also be required to respond orally on the entire program carried out in class.
A compulsory characterizing subject to be chosen from the following optional disciplines included in GROUP 1A1:
– Wind ensemble music I
Course year: 1 – Credits: 9 β Hours of lessons: 27 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Eligibility test.
Program of Study:
From the wind literature of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern and Contemporary periods, compositions, originals or arrangements, useful for an adequate training course of the student, will be identified. In the presence of particular needs, the choice will be adapted to the various needs with the use of less frequented pieces and with the introduction of mixed ensembles, homogeneous groups, small instrumental groups to deal with the most significant literature for each instrument. The study program will be agreed between teachers and students especially on the basis of possible staff. For educational needs, pieces that also include other instruments besides winds such as piano, organ, percussion, etc., can also be included in the program.
The form of verification will be established by the teacher.
– Ensemble music for string instruments I
Course year: 1 – Credits: 9 β Hours of lessons: 27 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Eligibility test.
Program of Study:
Study and analysis of significant pieces in the various chamber ensembles, compatibly with the possibilities of the ensemble.
Development of performance skills in relation to problems related to playing together, with specific attention to mutual listening, care of intonation and rhythmic and sound relationships, equality of bow strokes and vibrato.
The form of verification will be established by the teacher.
– Performance practices and repertoire (for two pianos or piano 4 hands) I – CODI/21

Verification program:
Performance of a concert program, agreed with the teacher, of at least 20 minutes including an important composition of the classical period and one from the romantic period to the contemporary period for two pianos and / or piano four hands.

Performance of a program agreed with the teacher lasting not less than 15 minutes, including a minimum of two compositions from different historical periods.

Performance of at least two chamber compositions with different stylistic characteristics, from the classical period to the romantic period where they exist, also, where possible, in different chamber ensembles. The program, to be agreed with the teacher, must have a minimum duration of 30 minutes and may include transcriptions only and exclusively in the absence of original repertoire.
The candidate, for the formation of the chamber music group, must make use of students within the Institute who also attend other classes and, in case of impossibility, also of any external collaborators trusted by him and at his own expense.

Techniques of expression and body awareness
Course year: 1 – Credits: 6 β Hours: 36 β Group lesson – Assessment form: Exam.
Exam syllabus:
The exams will be carried out with the presentation, individual or collective, of a creation/improvisation of a vocal/musical movement which will then have to be argued from the mental genesis to its realization and motivate it in expressive details taking into account rhythm, movement and thought. The presentation can also be illustrated by a written paper on the topics elaborated.

Community Foreign Language I (English Language I)
Course year: 1 – Credits: 3 β Hours: 25 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of competence.
Program:
The study program will be established by the teacher following an accurate student entrance test and will be preparatory to the acquisition of the B1 level of English.
The form of final assessment will be established by the teacher and will concern the following language skills: Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing.
Second year
Musical semiography
Course year: 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Exam syllabus:
Written test:
Resolution of ancient and modern particular musical semiographic signs, appropriately described, also with traditional musical graphic examples in a maximum time of 30 minutes.
Oral exam:
Disquisition on the history of semiography from its origins to the present day, with particular reference to the development of instrumental musical writing. The test will be inherent to the instrument characterizing the course chosen by the candidate.

Program of Study:

The exam consists of three tests (20-25 minutes) with performances in wind ensembles and a colloquial one. Candidates, who will choose the scores to play with the professors, can perform the selected compositions with their classmates or with external collaborators.
Test 1) Performance of an important composition of the repertoire for wind ensemble. Alternatively, at least two significant pieces or tempos from different styles and historical periods.
Test 2) Concertation and performance of a time of an ensemble composition of medium difficulty chosen and assigned by the commission 24 hours before the exam. Alternatively, concertation of a particularly demanding and significant composition addressed in the study program.
Test 3) Hints of formal analysis of the scores addressed and discussion on the problems of the compositions performed.

Increase and development of all the aspects already highlighted in the first year.

Program:
Performance of at least two chamber compositions with different stylistic characteristics, from the modern period to the contemporary period, even where possible in different chamber ensembles. The program, to be agreed with the teacher, must have a minimum duration of 40 minutes and may include transcriptions only and exclusively in the absence of original repertoire.
The candidate, for the formation of the chamber music group, must make use of students within the Institute who also attend other classes and, in case of impossibility, also of any external collaborators trusted by him and at his own expense.

Community Foreign Language II (English Language II)

Program of Study:
Revision of the grammatical structures of the first year;
The study program will be established by the teacher, will include the revision of the grammatical structures of the first year and will be preparatory to the acquisition of the B2 level of English.
Exam syllabus:
Students will be tested on their skills and ability to take part in different types of interaction with the teacher with particular regard to the musical discipline.
The final exam form will be established by the teacher and will cover the following language skills: Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing It will also understand the main points of a specific written question with various exercises (Quizlet: written questions, terms to be combined, multiple choice questions and true/false questions) of both Classical and Jazz Music Terminology, after acquiring knowledge of the Glossary of Terminology and specialized musical definitions.
Final exam
Course year: 2 – Credits: 9 β Hours: β – Assessment form: Exam
Exam syllabus:
Free concert program, not coinciding with another program performed entirely in previous exams, of about 30 minutes, in a chamber group. Presentation of a written hall program , with brief notes on the authors and the program performed. Short oral presentation of the program performed (historical and musical notes, synthetic information on the author and on the pieces subject to the performance).

History of costume design and scenography
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Verification:
Presentation of a written paper on one or more topics covered during the course and concerning the history of entertainment, styles, costume, staging, furniture and theatrical make-up with particular reference to Opera and other forms of musical performance. The assessment must show an in-depth analysis of the notions acquired.
Community foreign language: German language
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Verification:
Written tests and/or questions and/or oral interview, or on the basis of appropriate certification presented, that the level of knowledge of the language acquired by the candidate is appropriate for the year.
Music Pedagogy
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Exam.
Program:
The formation of personality and the role of the school curriculum in the musical didactic-educational project. The general methodological approach and its declination in the field of music. Music pedagogy in historical and modern methodologies. Emotional communication in music. The “Music” discipline in the 2012 National Indications currently in force.
Ongoing assessment: written test.
Final exam: Final oral discussion on the topics covered in the mid-term test. The final grade is based on the marks obtained in the ongoing tests.
Music Psychology
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Exam.
Program:
Emotional perception. Learning and Mental Structures: The Construction of the “Musical Vocabulary”. “Natural” listening and grouping mechanisms. Attention, memory, learning in music.
Ongoing assessment: written test.
Final examination: Final oral discussion on the topics covered in the mid-term test. The final grade is based on the marks obtained in the ongoing tests.
Methodology of historical-musical investigation
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Exam.
Ongoing assessment: Open-ended questionnaire on the topics under study.
Final exam:
Oral exam on the topics studied and covered in the mid-term test.
The final grade is based on the marks obtained in the ongoing tests.
Ornamentation Practice
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Verification of suitability.
Verification:
Present a short composition of your choice, taken from the instrumental baroque repertoire with reference to the candidate’s basic instrument, in particular a piece from Suites, Sonatas, Pieces, which presents a varied wealth of embellishments.
Extemporaneously perform a piece already adorned with embellishments, chosen by the teacher, for each instrument (keyboards in general, wind bow, pluck, etc.). Discuss the ornamental stylistic differences of French, German and Italian Baroque composers.
Fundamentals of Composition
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Program: The composition of simple and figurative choirs, as well as short pieces in ternary form and/or sonata-form for chamber ensembles to be agreed with the teacher at the beginning of the lessons, is aimed at developing compositional skills useful for a greater understanding of the artistic articulation of tonal language.
Verification:
At the end of the teaching hours, the teacher will express the judgment of suitability based on the verification, for each student, of the attendance, of the performance of the theoretical and/or practical work, both collective and individual, of the achievement of the set educational objectives.
Reading the score
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Program:
Performing on the piano in extemporaneous a piece written in the ancient keys, transporting a piece to the piano a tone above or a tone below, performing and intoning an ancient aria at first sight. The above pieces and the ancient aria will be assigned by the teacher.
Verification:
At the end of the teaching hours, the teacher will express the judgment of suitability also on the basis of the verification, for each student, of the attendance, of the performance of the theoretical and/or practical work, both collective and individual, of the achievement of the pre-established educational objectives.
Conducting instrumental and vocal groups
Course year: 1 or 2 – Credits: 6 β Hours of lessons: 36 β Group lesson – Form of assessment: Assessment of suitability.
Verification:
Practical test β Demonstrate that you have learned the basic conducting technique and gestures β in relation to tempo, agogic, phrasing, breathing and crowns β by conducting the main simple and composed measures with the help of a chamber ensemble (instrumental and/or vocal) and/or a collaborating pianist.
Theory test β Discuss the topics covered during the course: historical elements of orchestral conducting; the relationship between the soloist and the conductor in the work of analysis and concertation of the score; the figure of the solo conductor in the concert repertoire; Notes on concertation in ensemble music.
Processing, transcription and arrangement

Program:
At the beginning of the lessons, the transcription will be agreed with the teacher, to be carried out with a guided work in class, of two pieces (one for solo instrument to be transcribed for chamber ensemble and the other for chamber ensemble to be reduced for solo instrument) that are of general interest to the group of attending students.
Verification:
At the end of the scheduled teaching hours, the teacher will express the judgment of suitability based on the verification, for each student, of attendance, of the performance of the theoretical and/or practical work, both collective and individual, required, of the actual achievement of the set educational objectives.
